Steam Tunnels
Under the streets of downtown Missoula,
Montana many utilities and an abandoned steam tunnel
system can be found. Prior to the design and construction of a major renovation project on a
side street, ECHOTECH mapped the tunnel
system and unknown utilities with ground penetrating radar.

This radargram shows an arch-shaped tunnel, several pipes, and fractures in the road
base caused by material settling around the tunnel. The large steel steam
pipe running inside this two meter tall tunnel can also be distinguished.

Further to the east, a radargram shows two pipes in a single trench, a reinforced concrete
electrical conduit, and
the roof structure of a known flat-topped access tunnel.
